Eli and I got a lot of talking in during our over-lapping visits to the beach. Great to have time you Big E (a.k.a. the younger Eli, EKO, the elder twin, etc).
To follow up with everyone on one conversation Eli and I had, it seems worth while to approach Mary (?), asking for first right of refusal in the event she or her family decide to divest themselves of the beach property. It would be a shame if we (whomever "we" are) did not at least have the opportunity to consider purchasing the cottage should that option exist.
Food for thought...

hell yeah! our family has been going for 4 generations now and i think it would be tragic if the day came when we could not return there. not that i have much money to offer, but i fully support trying to keep the cottage in the family forever.
seems that, collectively, we've got the resources to make this happen so i would encourage y'all to make it happen!
I called Mary today. She said that if they ever consider selling she will let me know and give us first choice.
Before I reached Mary I talked to Mark, who was interested in talking about "the old days" and sounded postively nostalgic. So maybe he is more positive about continuing to own (and rent to us) than we had thought.
